Bolt on Natural Branch – Various Sizes

$10.00$19.00 (inc GST)

21st March – limited range currently, but a new batch of perches is cleaned and drying. I plan to list them in the next few days, weather dependent. Please sign up to a ‘back in stock’ notification on an out of stock product to find out when.

“Bark is Best” and these are the barkiest branches around! Replace the nasty dowel, sandpaper and concrete perches in your birds’ cage with these textured natural branches. Widely recommended by avian veterinarians, my handmade bolt on perches are:

  • Always barky, from a variety of native trees
  • Safely sanitised for your birds’ health
  • Include all stainless steel hardware (reusable)
  • Easy to attach to cage or aviary bars
  • Naturally file your birds’ nails and prevent pressure sores
  • Provide enrichment (birds love to chew the bark)

Also available in the store are Unique Forked Branches and Extra Thick perches (over 5cm diameter) for very large parrots. It is recommended to provide your bird with a range of branch thicknesses and bark types.

Don’t miss the reviews

Availability: Bolt on perches are handmade by me (Kirsty), are always in extremely high demand and production also depends on the weather. The actual quantity of available perches are listed and if the size of perch you’d like is out of stock, it is best to sign up to ‘back in stock’ notification on that product. I am regularly working on new batches of perches and listing the ones available. If you’ve waited a while, feel free to contact me to check availability. Did you know that multiple avian vets within the South-East Queensland area also stock my barky perches?

Bark types: These branches are gathered locally, from fresh native trees before the process of drying and cleaning begins. As a natural product, each branch will vary and may have some natural imperfections. A mix of Paperbark, Bottle Brush, Brush Box, Wattle, Casuarina and rough bark Eucalypt (like Ironbark and Bloodwood) branches are typically used. As the bark is chewed by your parrot or worn away and the branch b

ecomes smooth, perches should be replaced with new barky ones. In nature, branches sometime rub against each other and can leave small areas that are smooth or already missing some bark. Multiple perches are pictured in most photos, to show the variety of bark types, however they are sold as individual items. Purchase the quantity that you require.

When multiple perches are ordered, I always aim to provide a variety where available.  If you have a preference of which bark type you receive, please mention this in your order notes and I will do my best to accommodate. Please note, all types might not be available at all times and I always provide a fair variety.

Diameter: These sizes refer to the diameter of the perch, NOT the thickness of the bark.

  • Thin perches are under 2.5cm in diameter, best suited to small and medium parrots. They come with a shorter bolt.
  • Thick perches range from 2.5cm to 5cm in diameter and have a longer bolt. These thicker perches are best suited to medium and large parrots.
  • Extra Thick perches (over 5cm diameter) are available as a separate product for very large parrots.

Length: Bolt on perches are available in 15cm, 20cm, 25cm and 30cm lengths (please allow for a length difference of up to 1cm per perch). Choose the length to suit your space. The shorter perches are ideal for use on the inside of your birds’ cage door (most doors that open outwards are big enough to have the perch move in and out of the door space with it), while the longer ones suit your birds’ main cage space best. They can also be used as a ‘verandah’ outside of your birds’ cage. These branches are normally fairly straight, without major forks, though some may have small curves or forked stems coming off them. If you’d like a really curved or forked branch, check out the individually listed Unique Forked Branch, which are sometimes available in limited batches.

Cleaning: After an initial period of drying, the branches are cut to size then cleaned via a light scrub (to remove insects and debris, without taking too much bark off), then disinfected with F10 (bird safe veterinary disinfectant) and sun dried for multiple days before sale. Lichen is normal on some branches and is safe for your parrot. No insecticides are used so it is possible for small insects to be found on/in some of the timber, though this is uncommon and all branches are inspected before being sent.

Hardware: 100% stainless steel hardware is used, for the safest product for your bird. The bolt system allows the perch to be attached to the inside or outside of your birds’ cage and can also be used in aviaries. Each perch comes with a wingnut and 2 washers, to attach the perch to cage or aviary bars. The standard washers are 32mm in diameter, so suit most cage bars. The option exists to upgrade to large, 50mm washers for particularly large cage bars (recommended for bar spacing 2cm or wider). Or, if you already have a stash of spare wingnuts and washers from previous perches, you can choose the option to not have this hardware included and reuse your old ones.

Parrot Species: It is recommended to provide your bird with a range of branch bark types and diameters suitable for their species. See the below for details of which sizes will best suit your breed of bird. This refers to the available perches in your birds’ whole living space.

Budgie, Lovebird and similar: All thin branches, with some variety of diameters within this.

Cockatiel, Conure, Quaker (and similar small parrots): Mostly thin, but around 25% thick perches.

Indian Ringneck & Hahn’s Macaw: Around 25% thin, the rest thick.

Alexandrine: All thick except for 1 thin.

Galah, Corella, African Grey: Roughly 70% thick and 30% extra-thick.

Eclectus, Large Cockatoos & Macaws: Even mix of thick and extra-thick.

Keep in mind that birds typically sleep on the highest perch in their cage, so it is most important for this perch to have good bark for your parrots’ feet. Also consider a Seagrass Shelf for this space.

These are so great for our birds. Cheaper than pet shops. Freshly made and quick delivery. Excellent for our birds feet and a great chew toy. All our birds love stripping the bark off fresh perches. The bolt on ones are convenient and easy to use. Our birds love them

Great perch for my birds, super soft paperbark and they love to chew the flakes off. Easy to place in the cage. Great grip for my mobility-impaired cockatiel

My birds absolutely loved shredding the bark off of the branches! They also still continue to enjoy sitting on them whenever outside of their cages as well.

I love the natural perches, each piece is unique. My Quaker loves spending time debarking them. Even my aviary birds are enjoying them.

These are the best natural perches, always clean and always nice and barky! I’ve tried some from other places and honestly they are no where near the quality of the ones supplied by Kirsty.
