Foraging Wheel (First Generation)

$58.50 (inc GST)

There is a reason this original foraging wheel from Caitec is still around; it is great for feeding your birds’ dry food and treats and can be used by many breeds, including small parrots.

Fill with a mix of normal food or treats for your birds to enjoy. You can add a safe foraging substrate to make the food harder to get to. Your bird will need to turn the face of the wheel using the handle or the openings. This changes the position of the 2 openings and allows access to the 5 different compartments within the wheel. You can add chewable items to the mix for your bird to get their beak into. Mini Feather Weight Foot Toys fit well inside the compartments, as well as 2cm Vine Balls and small Yucca Pieces. You can also add Birdy Bagels and other chewing items like shredded paper.

This toy is made from strong polycarbonate and will hold up against even the tougher beaks. It attaches to the side of the cage using the typical Creative Foraging Systems washer/screw provided which fits most cage and aviary bars.
The wheel is about 15cm in diameter and 3cm deep and best suits small and medium parrots (Cockatiels to Corellas). It is not very suitable for Alexandrines and Cockatoos to Macaws due to their beak size. Check out the Generation II wheels instead.

Great foraging toy. My galah loves it and waits for it to be filled each morning. It keeps him occupied for the entire day and the 5 compartments add variety to what can be put in. The only problem I’ve come across is if the the items put in it are too small they will fall out of the wheel when the bird spins the front.

Thanks Amba for the great feedback! As discussed in more detail by message, positioning the Wheel on the side of the cage, with a foraging tray or bowl/dish below it can help to make the pieces falling out be less of an issue. Once Wallie has mastered his new toy well, you can cut pieces of paper or cardboard to fit in each compartment to cover them. He will need to chew the paper/cardboard to access the mix below which will also prevent small items falling out the opening when the wheel is turned. Happy foraging! 🙂

My boy ‘tiel Charlie still hasn’t quite figured this one out yet, but my girl Lucy has and it keeps her entertained for hours! She isn’t really large enough to push the lever, but instead just pushes the openings around until she hits something she’s happy with! I have mine filled with a mixture of Breeder’s Choice cat litter, crinkle paper, pellets and a (very) small amount of budgie seeds. As another reviewer mentioned, smaller things can fall out of the maze (though not large amount), but I have gotten around this by placing the maze above a sundeck platform (also sold by Animal Enrichment Australia), which is currently covered in corrugated cardboard. Anything that falls out lands on the sundeck and my girl then forages through that for her pellets and seeds. This also allows Charlie to share in the spoils, even if he can’t figure out how to use the thing himself!
