Small Parrot Foraging Starter Pack (Cockatiel, Conure, Quaker, Caique)

Small Parrot Foraging Starter Pack

Small Parrot Foraging Starter Pack (Cockatiel, Conure, Quaker, Caique)

Get your small parrot started with some beginner foraging toys from my recommendations. Use the dish and some substrate for a foraging tray and keep some substrate to use in some of the toys too.
You can choose foraging toy(s) from the range of beginner options and receive 5% off each foraging toy that you buy as part of this pack. See the videos below of my own flock with these toys.

It is best to introduce each toy one at a time and gradually, but why not stock up now and have them all ready to give to your bird, as they ace each puzzle!

There are 2 sets of toys in this pack that are similar to each other. The 3 Cup Foraging Toy is just the cheaper version of the Bottom’s Up. Then the Small Food Pyramid and Triangle Tower are similar. For Cockatiels and particularly small Conure breeds (eg Rose Crowned), the Small Food Pyramid is best. For most Conures (Green Cheek, Sun etc), Quakers and Caiques, the Triangle Tower is best, though the Food Pyramid is still suitable for them. You can choose either option in this pack.

Foraging Dish Starter Pack

A large rectangular plastic dish with metal hooks to attach to the bars of the cage. This is a large dish that makes a great foraging tray and is great for birds that don't like to be down low/on the ground of their cage. It comes with a 500g pack of bird safe foraging substrate to get you started.

Please introduce the concept of foraging for food gradually to your birds. Feel free to contact me to discuss if you need assistance with this.

The rectangular dish measures 23cm wide, 12.5cm deep and is 7cm tall, it is suitable for most breeds of parrot, but particularly small and medium birds. The hook on attachment suits most cage bars.

3 Cup Foraging Toy

The 3 Cup Foraging Toy is the well made, but cheaper copy of a very popular foraging toy that I have stocked for many years (The Bottom's Up). It is great for the smaller breeds of birds. It is easy to teach your bird to use and can also be made more difficult. Fill it with your bird's favourite treats, and their normal diet, mixed with bird safe foraging substrate. You can use Mini Feather Weight Foot toys, vine balls and other items in this toy as well as treats.

Your bird will need to lift the light, plastic lid of the 3 Cup Foraging Toy and reach their head into the cup to access their reward. The cups and lids move around freely on a long length of nickel plated chain. While your bird is learning to use the toy, you can sticky tape the lids open or partially open to make it easier for them. Then change to no tape, with the lids sitting loosely once your parrot knows that they can get the food with the lid lifted. You can even start sticky taping the lids closed once your parrot is really good at this toy! They will need to chew through the tape to open the lid! (avian vet recommended/safe).

The height of the cup is slightly less than that of the Bottom's Up, at 4.5cm instead of 5.5cm (see the pictures), but functions in the same way, including with the foot toys inside. The whole toy measures roughly 47cm long (including pear clip and bell) and 7cm wide. All hardware is nickel plated, though I can upgrade it to stainless steel hardware with the parts that I sell. There are now multiple options to select from if you'd like the hardware upgraded. Please see the last photo for examples also.

Bottom's Up

The original Bottom's Up is available here.

This is a very popular foraging toy that is great for the smaller breeds of birds. It is easy to teach your bird to use and can also be made more difficult. Fill it with your bird's favourite treats, and their normal diet, mixed with bird safe foraging substrate. You can use Mini Feather Weight Foot toys, vine balls and other items in this toy as well as treats. The photos show the toy with these items in use, which can be purchased separately. It comes brand new and empty.

Your bird will need to lift the light, plastic lid of the Bottoms Up toy and reach their head into the cup to access their reward.

The whole toy measures 43cm long (including pear clip and bell) and 6.5cm wide. All hardware is nickel plated, though I can upgrade it to stainless steel hardware with the parts that I sell. There are now multiple options to select from if you’d like the hardware upgraded.

Hide Away Hanging Box Feeder

The Creative Foraging Systems Hanging Box Feeder toy is great for feeding your birds' dry food and treats. Fill with bird safe foraging substrate to make the food harder to get to and more time consuming for your bird.

You can introduce this to your bird at an easy level, without any covering at first. Once they know there's food in the toy, you can start covering it with the sleeves provided for them to work more for their food. Your clever parrot will need to chew open the cardboard box to access the rewards inside! The cardboard sleeves come with various perforated openings that you can remove as 'windows' to the food inside, another great way to adjust the difficulty as your bird learns. The Hanging Box Feeder comes with 2 sleeves in the pack already and refill packs of 5 sleeves can be purchased separately.

This toy is made from clear polycarbonate and hangs on a short chain with pear clip to attach it to your birds' cage.

Small Acrylic Maze

This is a cute little foraging toy that is great for the smaller breeds of birds. Fill it with your bird's favourite treats, and their normal diet.

Your bird will need to spin the maze by holding onto the opening and moving it around. The wheel spins freely and your bird can watch their food move from shelf to shelf until it reaches the opening. By adding bird safe foraging substrate, you can increase the difficulty of this maze once your bird is experienced at it. The maze fits together as 2 pieces and is held firmly by the bolt and washers attaching it, however it can be taken apart for easy cleaning.

This toy is made from tough, clear and coloured acrylic and will hold up against even the tougher beaks. It is the small version of this toy, a large is also available and both are pictured in the last image.  The small measures 10cm in diameter and roughly 3cm thick/deep. Screws onto the side of the cage with the nut and bolt set, as well as 2 washers. Fits all cage/aviary bars.

Triangle Foraging Tower

The new Triangle Foraging Tower is a refillable food toy that is perfect for most sizes of birds, whether they're new to foraging or experienced.
Sprinkle some dry food (pellets, seed or nut pieces) into the 3 food wells on each level and watch your bird push and spin the levels to access their snack. This toy is similar to the Food Pyramid, but triangular in shape and the food wells are deeper. With the Scooter Z's Medium Skewer as a base, the Triangle Foraging Tower is easy to refill and modify with spare parts from my store. You can even purchase spare triangle levels!

There are 4 triangle pieces per toy and the pieces come in a total of 6 colours. A random selection will be chosen for you. If you'd like a particular selection of colours, please feel free to note this during checkout and I will try to accommodate. The toy measures about 27cm tall and 13 to 14cm wide. The skewer is stainless steel and includes a small quick link, while the timber is coloured with food safe dye. The plastic attachments at the bottom are bird safe, adding decoration and making it easier to find the screw part of the skewer if you lose it!

Small Food Pyramid

This is well designed, foraging toy is made in Australia, with stainless steel metal and safely coloured timber. You can hide treats, beads and normal diet/pellets within the many 'wells' of this toy which are placed on each level of the pyramid (except for the top block). Your bird will need to spin the levels to access the food wells and get their reward.

The Food Pyramid is made with 100% stainless steel hardware and uses safe, vegetable dyed timber. Between each timber layer, there is a small square of vegetable tanned leather. Each pyramid is slightly different and colours vary. Please note that the green is now more of an 'olive' green, than a 'grass' green. The first photo shows this.

This toy does not come with a hanging link and is topped with an 'o' ring to attach your own link too. You can choose your preferred link from the options.

The Food Pyramid measures 11 x 11cm wide and 12cm tall. It is best suited to Budgies, Lovebirds and Cockatiels. While it is also suitable for Conures, Quakers and Caiques, I'd recommend looking at the Triangle Foraging Tower for these 'larger small parrots' instead.
